Over 40? We recommend an annual mammogram

No doctor's order is required to schedule a screening mammogram

The reason for an annual screening mammogram is to detect tumors at the earliest stage, before they're even detectable by human touch. That's why mammograms are an important part of a woman's annual wellness routine. Getting an annual screening is one of the healthiest habits a woman can develop.

For 40 years, Solis Mammography has been the Home of the Peace of Mind Mammogram with a commitment to clinical excellence and a compassionate, patient-focused approach to mammography. Our specialized expertise in delivering breast-dedicated care means you'll enjoy the benefits of an exceptional experience and exceptionally accurate results.

FAQs
Do I need a doctor’s order or referral to schedule a mammogram?

No, you do not need a doctor's order to schedule a screening mammogram at most of our locations. However, we do require that you provide the name of an established physician at the time of your appointment, in order to share your results with your doctor.

Is a mammogram covered by insurance?

Solis Mammography is in-network with most major insurance. For women 40+, your 3D mammogram is a covered preventive health benefit with a $0 out-of-pocket cost under most plans. Self-pay options are also available.

How much does a mammogram cost without insurance?

All Solis Mammography centers offer a self-pay option. As the out-of-pocket cost for a mammogram can vary, feel free to give us a call at 866-717-2551 or send an email to insuranceinfo@solismammo.com for more information.

Do I need to do any prep before my mammogram?

If you are a new patient, you will need to send any previous mammography records to Solis Mammography prior to your appointment. Your previous images will be compared to your new exam images by our breast-specialized radiologists.

Additionally, follow the directions below to make your appointment go as smoothly as possible:

  • Don’t apply deodorant the day of your exam. It can interfere with your images and cause an unnecessary return visit.
  • Wear a two-piece outfit. You will undress only from the waist up. We provide comfortable privacy capes to wear during your visit.
  • Avoid using any lotion, powder, cream or perfume the day before or the day of your appointment.

Once you check-in, you will be taken to a changing room where you will undress from the waist up. We will provide you with a comfortable privacy cape to wear before your exam begins. During your exam, one of our expert mammography technologists will guide you through the procedure, which takes no more than 10 minutes, with each breast getting compressed twice.

After your mammogram, you will change clothes and leave the center. Your results will be sent via email in two business days or less. Don’t forget to schedule next year’s appointment during check-in.

When should I begin getting a mammogram?

Average risk women should begin getting annual mammograms starting at age 40. Your first mammogram establishes a baseline understanding of your breast tissue and is used as a comparison for future screenings, allowing a radiologist to monitor any changes year over year. This first mammogram will also determine the density of your breast tissue because research has shown that women with dense breasts have a higher lifetime risk of developing breast cancer.

What's the difference between a screening and a diagnostic mammogram?

Screening mammograms are routine annual exams for women who are not experiencing any breast issues or symptoms of breast cancer. Screening mammograms usually take less than 30 minutes and results are received via email in two business days or less. Screening mammogram appointments can be scheduled without a doctor's order at most of our locations.

Diagnostic mammograms are for women experiencing suspicious breast changes, such as a new breast lump, dimpling or puckering of the skin, pain in the breast, or nipple thickening or discharge. A diagnostic mammogram includes additional targeted images used to evaluate the abnormal findings of a screening mammogram. Diagnostic mammograms take a little longer than a regular screening and you will have a consultation with the radiologist to determine if additional procedures are required. A doctor’s order is needed to schedule a diagnostic mammogram appointment.

How long does a mammogram appointment take?

Most appointments only take 30 minutes. The mammogram procedure generally takes less than 10 minutes, with each breast getting compressed twice. Many women schedule their mammograms during their lunch break or in between other activities. Solis Mammography makes mammograms quick and easy with online scheduling, convenient locations, efficient appointments and fast results.

How do I get my mammogram results?

Results are sent via secure email to you and your physician in two business days or less.

What are dense breasts and how do they affect my mammogram?

Dense breasts have more glandular and connective tissue than fatty tissue. Breast density is divided into four categories (A, B, C and D) that range from almost entirely fatty to extremely dense. Federal regulations require that patients be told if they have dense breasts – categories C and D are considered dense.

  • Categories A and B are not dense
  • Categories C and D are dense

About half of women over 40 have dense breasts. Breast density changes over a woman’s lifetime and can only be identified through an annual mammogram.

Can I get a mammogram if I have breast implants?

Our technologists are specially trained to safely image breasts with implants for an accurate screening exam. Let your technologist know about your implants so they can tailor your exam – sharing implant type or placement can support clearer imaging.

Are mammograms painful?

Many women have found traditional mammograms to be painful. At Solis Mammography, our skilled technologists are trained in positioning you correctly to reduce pain and discomfort. Additionally, many of our centers use SmartCurve, a curved compression surface shaped like a woman’s breast. Designed to reduce compression on the chest wall, as well as pinching and tugging, SmartCurve distributes pressure more evenly for a more comfortable mammogram. Research has shown that 93 percent of women who previously experienced pain during mammograms found SmartCurve to be more comfortable.

What is 3D mammography?

3D mammography is our foundation of care. It's the most accurate screening technology currently available, because it provides our breast-specialized radiologists with more than 60 images of breast tissue to evaluate.

We integrate 3D technology with SmartCurve, the revolutionary curved mammogram, to deliver a better mammogram that is more accurate and comfortable.

As one of the country’s leading authorities on 3D mammography, we know that it increases the early detection of invasive breast cancer by 54%, allowing our radiologists to find cancers as early as stage 0, and decreases call backs by 37 percent.
