Reframing My Annual Mammogram as Self Care
An important act of self-care for me is getting my annual mammogram. Admittedly, this was not the case when I had my first mammogram and for years to follow. In fact, for many years the first word that came to mind for me when thinking about my annual mammogram was trauma.
Despite my apprehension and equipped with the knowledge that 1 out of 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, I have reframed my annual mammogram as an act of self love, kindness and self care.
Breast cancer found at its earliest stages has a nearly 100% cure rate, which is why we should prioritize annual screening mammograms in our 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and beyond. I’ve found ways to make the experience more enjoyable by listening to calming music before the appointment, treating myself to a mani/pedi after my exam, and, most importantly, choosing a SmartCurve mammogram for a more comfortable screening.
As I get older, I’ve learned to love my body and embrace it. We only live once, and we only have one body to experience this life in. When I get my yearly exam, it’s just one more step I’m taking to enjoy life by providing the peace of mind that I’m doing everything I can to take care of myself.
We should invest in ourselves, because each of us is worthy of self-love. I’m proud to tell my friends (and, let’s be honest, since you’re reading this, sometimes strangers) when I’m going to get a mammogram, and I encourage them to do the same. It could save someone’s life.
Maybe the next time my girlfriends want to get together, I’ll suggest getting our annual mammograms together. Followed by pedicures, of course!
