ADDISON, TEXAS (Jan. 1, 2015) — Solis Mammography has recently added very exciting 3D mammography technology at your local center.

In the April issue of Radiology, mammographic tomosynthesis (3D mammography) was shown to benefit all classes of women: "The use of mammography plus tomosynthesis in a screening environment resulted in a significantly higher cancer detection rate and enabled the detection of more invasive cancers while reducing the number of false positives."

Solis believes that this new technology, combined with the highly specialized breast imaging radiologists who will be reading the mammograms will provide women with the peace of mind they deserve concerning their breast health.

Starting January 1, 2015, Medicare will cover the 3D portion of your screening mammogram when performed with a standard 2D screening mammogram. The 3D portion of the mammogram will be paid 100 percent as part of a Women’s Wellness Exam. If performed with a diagnostic mammogram a 20 percent coinsurance will apply.

As mandated by the Affordable Care Act, nearly all insurance carriers cover standard 2D screening mammograms at 100 percent with no copay regardless of deductible.

Now that Medicare has approved 3D and has established payment norms, the commercial insurance companies will most likely follow the Medicare guidelines. However, each insurance carrier does have the right to decide how much it will cover for any particular imaging procedure. Currently we do not know how each individual insurance company will cover this new technology. As such, you may receive a bill for the 3D portion of your mammogram.

Should your insurance carrier not cover 3D mammography we strongly encourage you to make them aware of your feelings on this important breast health issue.
